Five great suggestions from my colleague Liz Johnson. Click here for a quick link to the post about the house tour that’s sponsored by the Historical Society of the Nyacks.
Bourbon Street of Nyack: Big windows open to the street so you can feel like you’re in New Orleans in downtown Nyack. Crawfish etouffee, jambalaya (vegetarian and regular), blackened catfish and a couple of gumbos are the mainstays of a menu that also includes po’ boys, a crawfish boil, as well as some Creole and Cajun-free options, like pasta. 132 Main St., Nyack. 845-727-4954.
Harry’s Burritos: Fun and funky décor and an easygoing menu. Tex-Mex via California, with a customizable selection of tacos, nachos, salads and burritos. Bonus: There are plenty of vegetarian choices. 90 Main St., Nyack. 845-353-5520. www.harrysburritos.com.
O’Donoghue’s Tavern: Burger and a beer? You’ve found the right place. In addition to the 50 years of Rockland memorabilia decorating the walls, a rotating beer tap and the live music on Saturday nights, a friendly and talkative staff makes this a great place to relax. Try the bistro salad, the burger, the roasted half-chicken or the Thai wrap: poached chicken in a peanut sauce. 66 Main St., Nyack. 845-358-0180. www.odonoghuestavern.com.
Hudson House: A long-time favorite for good food in an elegant yet un-stuffy setting in Nyack’s erstwhile Village Hall, complete with jail cell turned wine cellar. Known as a great dinner, lunch, or Sunday brunch destination, it’s also a pleasant spot for a cocktail, beer or glass of wine. 134 Main St. 845-353-1355, hudsonhousenyack.com.
Chef selection of daily mezze with bread at 8 North Broadway, TJN file photo.
8 North Broadway: The magnificent copper bar and tin ceilings of the former Lushane’s have been maintained, but the restaurant has received a modern face lift inside and out. The menu features traditional Mediterranean dishes with ever-shifting local ingredients, sure to keep regulars coming back to see what chef-owner Constantine Kalandranis will whip up next. 8 N. Broadway. 845-353-1200, 8northbroadway.com.
