The Jay Heritage Center in Rye is a jewel of a property occupying 23 acres on Long Island
Sound. The 1838 Greek revival mansion has been restored with an eye towards both
energy efficiency and architectural integrity. Now the Jay Heritage Center is turning its
efforts to the renewal of the formal gardens and the oldest man-managed meadow in New
York State, which stretches from the east veranda to the Sound. Our exhibit will
chronicle the work that has been done to preserve the delicate balance of nature in the
meadow and document the goals of the restoration of the gardens and the ha-ha.
