If you’re looking for a handsome tree that looks good in every season and doesn’t take up a lot of room, you can’t go wrong with a Japanese maple.
Starting Sunday, Sept. 15 and running through Nov. 15, you can see an on-site garden that Down to Earth nursery in Pomona has created to showcase its collection of 24 varieties of Japanese maples.
The exhibit is free, and advisers will be on hand to explain the attributes of each of the varieties. If you like what you see, all trees will be available for sale. Prices are from $79.99 to $3,000.
Highlights include the the yellow-leaf ‘Aurea,’ the coral bark maple (‘Sangokaku’) with bark that seems to glow in winter, a dwarf mounding form called ‘Dr. Seuss’ and the dwarf red-leaf ‘Shaina.’
You’ll also find weeping Japanese maples in both red and green and variegated leaf forms. Some of the trees are quite small (perfect for a patio) while others will eventually reach a height of 15 to 20 feet.
Down to Earth is at 1040 Route 45 in Pomona, just off Exit 12 of the Palisades Interstate Parkway, 845-354-8500, downtoearthnursery.com. The free show is open during nursery hours, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. every day.
