email from Steve Byrns:
“Dear Friends of Untermyer Gardens:
We have had a splendid run of tours, both public and private, at Untermyer Gardens this year. Over a thousand people have marveled at the magnificent and sprawling gardens created by Samuel Untermyer in Yonkers, New York, and learned its fascinating history. Our website hits grew exponentially over the summer, thanks to the wonderful articles in the press and word of mouth.
Our days as America’s Greatest Forgotten Garden are numbered!
… Now things will quiet down at Untermyer over the winter. There is much to repair from the effects of Sandy. Paths will be upgraded. The viewshed toward the river will broadened. Mosaics will be cleaned. Finally, there will be much preparation for the installation of a deer fence, which is the lynchpin of our efforts to expand beyond the Walled Garden.
I cannot emphasize enough the importance of the deer fence. If you are interested in supporting our work, won’t you please consider a year-end gift to help us reach our goal of $200,000 to erect the fence around the entire garden? We are already more than halfway there, and believe that it is within reach to raise the funds necessary to do this work next spring.
Gratefully,
Stephen F. Byrns
Chairman, Untermyer Gardens Conservancy

Thanks for your comments Virginia. We don’t know why more peolpe don’t plant pig face in their gardens. Perhaps there is a little of the 60/70 s cringe. People follow the trends with plants just as they do with fashion. But we think pig face is coming back. So, your garden will be uber cool!
