Stone Barns Center Launches 2nd Annual Campaign with Whole Foods Market to Offer Professional Development for Teachers
Pocantico Hills, NY (February 21, 2012) Stone Barns Center announced today that it will partner with Whole Foods Market’s Northeast region to offer professional development for teachers in the tri-state area. Building on the success of last year’s “Nominate Your Teacher!” campaign, Stone Barns and Whole Foods Market are expanding the program to include 24 K-12 teachers who will spend a day at Stone Barns learning about sustainable food and farming. Members of the public are encouraged to nominate a special teacher who has shown interest in environmental initiatives, nutrition, school gardens or healthy food systems. Stone Barns Center’s professional development programs focus on helping teachers expand their knowledge of sustainable farming and incorporate food and agriculture into their classroom lessons.
During their day at Stone Barns, teachers will explore the following questions:
- Where does our food really come from?
- How does what we choose to eat affect our health, our communities, and the environment?
- How do we begin to teach children to become thoughtful food consumers?
Components of the professional development day include:
- An in-depth tour of the farm at Stone Barns
- Hands-on seasonal farm chores
- Conversations with Stone Barns farmers
- Harvest and preparation of a simple, seasonal farm-to-table lunch
- An opportunity to share resources and activities to take back to the classroom
Judy Fink, Programs Director at Stone Barns Center, said: “After a teacher participates in a full day education program here – interacting with farmers, doing farm chores, cooking a farm-fresh meal, and learning how to integrate these lessons and concepts into their curriculum – he or she will be able to share these valuable experiences and deepen these lessons with students for years to come.”
