“A Petite Flower Show Celebrates Perfume
The stylish French have given us many things: fine food, couture clothes and
of course, plenty of perfume. So, it’s not surprising that when the awardwinning
New Horizons Garden Club was thinking up a theme for its 20th
Anniversary flower show, it came up with a French title: “Fleur Essence” —
you know, the perfume of flowers. But, if your high school French leaves
you saying “florescence” as in light bulbs, that’s OK too, because the show
will definitely be illuminating.
“Fleur Essence” a Standard Petite flower show is happening the weekend of
October 7, 8 and 9 at Lasdon Park in Somers. There’ll be floral designs
related to perfume and horticultural exhibits that will enlighten the beginning
gardener and the expert too.
At the show, you’ll see petite versions of flower arrangements in six design
categories from “Romance” to “Noir” and in the horticulture section you’ll see
specimens of miniature annuals, perennials, succulents and vegetables. The
“Spirit” category will have the best herbs for cooking, fragrance and
And don’t forget to get a whiff of the educational exhibit of vintage perfume
bottles because as French perfumer Robert Ricci said,
“If the perfume is an art, the object which contains it must be a
masterpiece…” And these bottles are.
Why particular scents makes us energized or relaxed is part of another
exhibit on the secrets of aromatherapy.
So, if it’s true that “Happiness is perfume, you can’t pour it on somebody
else without getting a few drops on yourself” then come to Fleur Essence
and be happy.
Fleur Essence Flower Show is free and open to the public, Friday, 1 – 3:30
PM; Saturday and Sunday, 10 AM – 3 PM.
Lasdon Park and Arboretum is
located on Route 35 in Somers, one mile west of I-684 Exit 6 and one mile
east of the Taconic Parkway – Yorktown Exit. For more information call
