Young Farmers Conference
December 3-4, 2009

$180/adults
Stone Barns Center presents its second annual Young Farmers Conference: Reviving
the Culture of Agriculture – designed especially for young and new farmers.
As the number of American farmers aged 55 or older has grown from 37% to over
60% in the last 60 years, the future of farming depends heavily on the entry of a new
generation of farmers. In order to better guarantee their success, it is vital that they
receive all of the training, tools, and knowledge available. The Young Farmers
Conference is designed to help remove obstacles faced by young farmers and provide
a space for farmers to network with peers and learn from leaders in the field – helping
to ensure that the next generation of farmers is equipped for the work ahead.
The 2009 Young Farmers Conference will provide a forum for more than 200
participants to learn from agricultural luminaries, peers, and advocacy organizations
through workshops, keynotes, and panel discussions. Keynote address will be given by
Wes Jackson of the Land Institute, and Fred Kirschenmann of Stone Barns Center and
the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture at Iowa State University
A video of the 2008 Young Farmers Conference can be found online:

About the author
Katie Bill Cary grew up in Louisville, Ky. His gardening was limited to growing parsley and impatiens on the windowsill of Manhattan walkups until the mid-1990s when he bought a rundown old chicken farm on 8 acres in the Hudson Valley. Now he spends his weekends chasing deer, hacking away at invasive shrubs and vines and wondering why he doesn`t have more meadow and less lawn.
