Tour the High Line with NY Hort Society

August
19

From the Horticultural Society of New York:

“Wednesday, August 26
Urban Landscape Series
Tour of The High Line

“Your own private tour…
Join the HSNY and your guide Dodo Loechle for an early evening tour of the wonderful gardens of the High Line. This signature landscape was designed by James Corner Field Operations, with the consultation of planting designer Piet Oudolf. The High Line’s plantings are inspired by the self-seeded landscape that grew on the out-of-use elevated rail tracks during the 25 years after the train stopped running. Netherlands-based Piet Oudolf chose perennials, grasses, shrubs and trees for their hardiness, sustainability, and unique color and texture. With a focus on native species, many of the plants that originally grew on the rail beds have been incorporated into the park landscape.

About your guide:
Dodo Loechle is a certified horticulturist with extensive experience in chemical free gardening, concentrating on container and rooftops gardens. She has worked for various botanic gardens, including Kirstenbosch National Botanic Garden in Cape Town, Africa, where she worked exclusively with native cape flora. Specializing in plant identification, Dodo has logged countless hours as a tour guide along with putting her talents to use as an instructor at the New York Botanical Garden and The Brooklyn Botanic Garden.

Ouch! That hurts. Oh, this is sad, but at least they are admitting to it! “The High Line’s plantings are inspired by the self-seeded landscape…”

Inspired by? Why not “Here is what thrived here for decades and LOOK – we did not destroy it all” or “In this area, we have a section of native NYC plants!”

Hey – it is beautiful, and I’m proud to say I had a small part in saving the High Line, but some of the tree and “unnatural” plants that were selected are so out of place.

Why, after countless studies and hours of documenting exactly what WAS thriving so beautifully did they rip it out – - has any section been saved? Boo!

  2. Bill Cary

You’re right, you’re right. They did tell me that they saved the seeds from what was there and used them to regrow parts of the park.

About the author
Katie Bill Cary grew up in Louisville, Ky. His gardening was limited to growing parsley and impatiens on the windowsill of Manhattan walkups until the mid-1990s when he bought a rundown old chicken farm on 8 acres in the Hudson Valley. Now he spends his weekends chasing deer, hacking away at invasive shrubs and vines and wondering why he doesn`t have more meadow and less lawn.
