Another First-Time Gardener

Email from another first-time gardener:

“Hello Bill,

This is Beth Grafman writing, Ryan’s Mom.  Ryan saw your article and he just had to have a garden.  So he got his father (no green thumb!) to finally build the garden next to the house.  All I had to do was get some materials.

Ryan planted the first part last week.  The next part will be this week.  So far the seeds are (we hope) germinating nicely. We wll see.

BTW, last month Ryan and his Dad participated in the Westchester Parks clean up and planted a tree at Saxon Woods pool!”

Beth says Ryan is 7 and 1/2 and in the second grade at Solomon Schechter School in White Plains.

About the author
Katie Bill Cary grew up in Louisville, Ky. His gardening was limited to growing parsley and impatiens on the windowsill of Manhattan walkups until the mid-1990s when he bought a rundown old chicken farm on 8 acres in the Hudson Valley. Now he spends his weekends chasing deer, hacking away at invasive shrubs and vines and wondering why he doesn`t have more meadow and less lawn.
