I’m just back from a weekend visiting family in Greenwood, SC. My brother and sister-in-law moved there a couple of years ago to be near their new grandchildren, and we moved my mother to a nursing home down there in December.
One of the highlights of the weekend — hey, I’m a gardener — was a visit to the newish Jackson & Perkins outlet store. What prices! I so wished I had my truck. I would have filled it.
Most of the trees were priced at $10, including these bald cyprus:
Oodles and oodles of rosebushes:
I’ve been dying to try these new Western arborvitae. They grow fast and they’re supposed to be deer resistant.
I’ve been seeing 5-foot ones for $60. Here (and they were very healthy looking, with trunks nearly as big as my wrist):
There was a good mix of indoor and outdoor space.
Even though I had a small suitcase for the plane trip home, I had to buy something. So I got two small clethra (summersweet) shrubs (‘Rosea’):
and two Rudbekia ‘Goldsturm’:
I wrapped the bases with taped-up newspaper, then draped a plastic bag over them before tucking them in among my dirty clothes. They survived the trip just fine. On my windowsill this morning:
So if you’re in this area of South Carolina (an hour from Greenville-Spartanburg), with an empty car, I highly recommend a visit. Does anyone know of any similar outlets in our area?
