“Sustainable Putnam 2009
Energy – Landscape – Food – Water
Four-Part Series Begins Saturday, February 7

“A four-part  workshop series that explores the ideas and techniques of sustainability—the concept that we can meet our needs while being good stewards of natural resources, energy, our finances, health,  families and the environment will be sponsored by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Putnam County.

All programs will take place at the Putnam County Emergency Training and Operations Center, Don Smith Campus, 112 Old Route 6 Carmel on Saturdays from 9am to 12 noon.

Topics will cover how to:

Save money on your home and food bills
Explore energy alternatives
Grow your own food
Landscape with the environment
Protect the water – you may have to drink it
Incorporate ideas for your family, home, property and the planet
Compost and recycle from kitchen to garden

February 7th - The first workshop in this series will investigate practical solutions on how to Save Money, Save Energy: How to Make Small Household Changes for Big Savings,  The workshop features Mark Pierce, Project Manager for Cornell University’s Consumer Education Program for Residential Energy Efficiency, which helps New Yorkers improve the way we plan, buy, use and manage energy.   Participants will learn proven methods to save money on heating, cooling, electricity and more.

The following workshops will also consider methods of sustainability.

April 25th – Sustainable Landscaping: How to Make Your Property More Beautiful with Low-Maintenance, Earth-Friendly Methods

June 13th – The Victory Garden: Feed your Family Healthy Food from Your Garden

October 10th – Water Wisdom: Ideas, Tools & Techniques to Protect Drinking and Surface Water

Registrants can choose to attend one or more of the workshops at the single-seminar rate of $25 per person.  Registration for the four-part series is $85.00 per person.  Seating is limited to 100 people.

Katie Bill Cary grew up in Louisville, Ky. His gardening was limited to growing parsley and impatiens on the windowsill of Manhattan walkups until the mid-1990s when he bought a rundown old chicken farm on 8 acres in the Hudson Valley. Now he spends his weekends chasing deer, hacking away at invasive shrubs and vines and wondering why he doesn`t have more meadow and less lawn.
