I got a late email about Doug Tallamy speaking at the NY Botanical Garden tonight at 6:30. He’s quite good and his book, “Bringing Nature Home: How Native Plants Sustain Wildlife in Our Gardens” is outstanding. Here’s a link to a previous post about him and his book.
“DOUGLAS TALLAMY “GARDENING FOR LIFE” LECTURE, DECEMBER 2, 2008 | 6:30 p.m.
“The Torrey Botanical Society announces a feature lecture by Dr. Douglas Tallamy, author of the celebrated book Bringing Nature Home: How Native Plants Sustain Wildlife in Our Gardens. The lecture will be held at The New York Botanical Garden on Tuesday, December 2, 2008 at 6:30 p.m. in the Janet and Arthur Ross Lecture Hall.
The lecture is part of the Torrey Botanical Society Annual Lecture Series and is being co-presented by New York City Audubon. Dr. Tallamy, Professor and Chair of the Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Delaware, will discuss the important ecological roles of the plants in our landscapes, emphasize the benefits of designing gardens with these roles in mind, and explore the consequences of failing to do so. Through his research on plant-insect interactions and how they affect local animal diversity, Dr. Tallamy has found that “Gardening in this crowded world carries both moral and ecological responsibilities that we can no longer ignore.” The lecture’s emphasis on ecology and stewardship is designed to appeal to a broad audience, including native gardening enthusiasts and environmentally conscience individuals.
“The lecture is free and open to the public. For information on how to get to The New York Botanical Garden go to www.nybg.org and click on “DIRECTIONS.” Lecture attendees should enter the Garden through the Mosholu Gate, directly across the street from Metro-North Railroad’s “Botanical Garden” station.

Bill Cary grew up in Louisville, Ky. His gardening was limited to growing parsley and impatiens on the windowsill of Manhattan walkups until the mid-1990s when he bought a rundown old chicken farm on 8 acres in the Hudson Valley. Now he spends his weekends chasing deer, hacking away at invasive shrubs and vines and wondering why he doesn`t have more meadow and less lawn.
