Woodpecker Problems

December
1

Here’s email from Alexis:

“I have a house from the 1840’s with pillars in the front. As of late, a woodpecker has been drilling holes in them. Do you have any ideas as to how we might deter him? I’m worried about my house!”

I forwarded it to Helle Raheem of the Bedford Audubon Society, who forwarded it to a few of her experts.

Here’s email from John Askildsen of Millbrook, has been with Bedford Audubon for over 25 years and is a nationally recognized authority on birds, Helle says.

John’s advice:

“Basically, if the woodpecker is working away at the wooden pillars, it means there is insect life in the wood, or it is rotting, etc. They should have it checked out by a carpenter.”

I’ve also heard that male woodpeckers do this sort of noisy pecking to simply mark their territory and will stop on their own in a few weeks.

Any other thoughts out there?

About the author
Katie Bill Cary grew up in Louisville, Ky. His gardening was limited to growing parsley and impatiens on the windowsill of Manhattan walkups until the mid-1990s when he bought a rundown old chicken farm on 8 acres in the Hudson Valley. Now he spends his weekends chasing deer, hacking away at invasive shrubs and vines and wondering why he doesn`t have more meadow and less lawn.
