Fall Lawn Tips

October
19

From Nature’s Lawn & Garden:

“Late Fall Lawn Tips (Northern Lawns)

“1. Gradually lower your mowing height once you notice that the lawn growth is slowing down. This usually happens around Columbus Day. Don’t scalp it down all at once, but make sure it is short before the snow flies.
2. Keep leaves from matting on the grass and avoid unnecessary foot traffic or heavy machines when the soil is soft and wet. This compacts the ground, makes ruts and causes future weeds.
3. Stay off when a light frost covers the lawn.
4. Seed bare and thin spots. If it doesn’t grow this fall, some of it will sprout in mid-spring next year.”

About the author
Katie Bill Cary grew up in Louisville, Ky. His gardening was limited to growing parsley and impatiens on the windowsill of Manhattan walkups until the mid-1990s when he bought a rundown old chicken farm on 8 acres in the Hudson Valley. Now he spends his weekends chasing deer, hacking away at invasive shrubs and vines and wondering why he doesn`t have more meadow and less lawn.
