Here’s email from the Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture in Pocantico Hills about the return of their farmers market. I had every intention of going on a Friday afternoon last summer but never got there.
“Stone Barns Farm Market is back!
“Join us for opening day at the market this Friday, 05/02/2008, from 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM!
• Market Hours are Wednesdays 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM (Member hour is 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM), Fridays & Sundays 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM
• Wednesdays at the the Market we’ll welcome vendors from other farms including Bread Alone, Red Jacket Orchards and Consider Bardwell
• Fridays at the Market will feature seasonal tastings by Blue Hill at Stone Barns Chefs
• On Sundays at the Market enjoy live music by area artists (if you’re interested in playing the Market, contact us!)
• Bring your own bag! In order to do our part in cutting down on the number of plastic bags we use, Stone Barns will no longer provide new bags to customers at the Farm Market. Please bring your own bags to carry all that wonderful Stone Barns bounty home with you!”
And here’s info about another event there on Sunday:
“Will Allen: Author of The War on Bugs
Saturday 05/03/2008 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM FREE
Join us as we welcome Will Allen, author of the newly published book The War on Bugs, in which Will traces the curious history of the evolution of chemical pesticides & fertilizers and their rise to become a mainstay in American agriculture. Will simultaneously documents the waves of resistance put forth by farmers, consumers, and activists, pushing back against each new generation of “scientific” promises for better living through chemistry. Join us for a presentation by the author, with a book-signing to follow.” Go here to enroll.
“Reminder: Parking Policy
Stone Barns has reinstituted our seasonal parking fee of $5. Payment is cash only. As always, parking is free for all Stone Barns members.
We look forward to seeing you & your family at the barns!”

Bill Cary grew up in Louisville, Ky. His gardening was limited to growing parsley and impatiens on the windowsill of Manhattan walkups until the mid-1990s when he bought a rundown old chicken farm on 8 acres in the Hudson Valley. Now he spends his weekends chasing deer, hacking away at invasive shrubs and vines and wondering why he doesn`t have more meadow and less lawn.
