Want to see a great garden?
Check out Phillis Warden’s 7-acre piece of paradise in Bedford on Sunday, when it’s open to the public as part of the Garden Conservancy’s Open Days program.
I wrote an article in today’s paper about the Warden garden, with descriptions of her formal vegetable garden, koi ponds, manicured croquet court, wildflower meadow, perennial and shrub borders etc etc. It’s really something to see.
Here’s a link to the article. There’s a sidebar on the other four gardens in Westchester open on Sunday, including one owned by Michael Fuchs, founder of HBO. (I’ll do another blog post on that one, with some photos I took.)
Mark Vergari and I visited Phillis’ garden last week — these are his photos.
We also shot video for a home and garden segment on our “Hudson Valley NewsCenter Now” TV show on RNN.
The show runs from 5 to 7 pm weekdays and this one on the Warden garden airs tomorrow (don’t know the exact time yet). The video goes up on our Web site after it airs on TV.
Here’s Phillis feeding her koi.

If you go, don’t miss the marsh garden at the very back of the property. There’s a tree house you can climb for great even better views.

She’s got a great eye for foliage with interesting colors and textures.

And the formal vegetable garden. She does the planters, too.

Phillis’ garden will be open from 10 to 6. For more information, including directions to all five Westchester gardens open on Sunday, visit the Garden Conservancy’s Web site.

Bill Cary grew up in Louisville, Ky. His gardening was limited to growing parsley and impatiens on the windowsill of Manhattan walkups until the mid-1990s when he bought a rundown old chicken farm on 8 acres in the Hudson Valley. Now he spends his weekends chasing deer, hacking away at invasive shrubs and vines and wondering why he doesn`t have more meadow and less lawn.
