Free Butterfly Program on Saturday at IES

June
20

Pamela Freeman wants to let people know about a free butterfly program at the
Institute of Ecosystem Studies in Millbrook.

If it’s a nice day, should be a pretty drive there from northern Westchester or Putnam.

Here’s her email:

Take a butterfly adventure at the
Institute of Ecosystem Studies! On
Saturday June 23rd from
10 to 12pm visitors will have the
opportunity to explore butterfly life
while taking a leisurely stroll through
our display gardens and grounds.

IES Assistant Native Plant Gardener
Barry Haydasz will provide insight into
over twenty butterflies and skippers,
including where they live, what they
like to eat, and what attracts them to
various habitats.

Illustrated checklists
will help participants keep track of the
knowledge they are gaining.
Barry has spent several years
photographing flora and fauna on the
Institute’s grounds. Butterflies and
skippers are among his favorite
subjects. Bring your camera, he would
be happy to share photographic
techniques!

Free and open to the public, the
program will begin at the Gifford
House, located at 181 Sharon
Turnpike in Millbrook, N.Y. Need more
information? Contact Barry Haydasz at
(845) 677-7600×300 or e-mail

About the author
Katie Bill Cary grew up in Louisville, Ky. His gardening was limited to growing parsley and impatiens on the windowsill of Manhattan walkups until the mid-1990s when he bought a rundown old chicken farm on 8 acres in the Hudson Valley. Now he spends his weekends chasing deer, hacking away at invasive shrubs and vines and wondering why he doesn`t have more meadow and less lawn.
