My Name is Bill and I’m a Plantaholic

Nurseries start rolling out the red carpet as soon as they see me pulling in. What can I say? I love plants. I want to try them all.
At least I didn’t have to put the seat down on this trip.

Lots of gardeners come home with a few flats of plants on Mother’s Day weekend and again on Memorial Day weekend. I tend to do this all summer.
I’m always offering sage advice that you should plan out your garden before that first visit to the nursery. But I’m a sucker for a new pretty plant every time I see one.
I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve wandered around the yard with a new plant, trying to figure out where to put it.
Here’s more of what I scored on Saturday – the biggest hanging basket of fuschia I’ve ever seen, petunias, begonias, tomatoes, hot cherry and jalopeno peppers, coleus, vinca and sweet potato vine (‘Blackie’ and ‘Sweet Caroline’).

And herbs, lots of herbs: African blue basil, lemon verbena, chervil, purple and golden-edged sage, sweet marjoram, basil ‘Genovese’ (the basic one), chives, English thyme and variegated lemon thyme.

And back for Round 2…
Here’s what jumped in the car on Sunday.

I’m a sucker for old-fashioned red geraniums. I also got more vinca, petunias (love the Wave series) and sweet potato vine, along with scaevola (purple fan flower).
I can’t wait to see what I can find on Saturday…

Bill Cary grew up in Louisville, Ky. His gardening was limited to growing parsley and impatiens on the windowsill of Manhattan walkups until the mid-1990s when he bought a rundown old chicken farm on 8 acres in the Hudson Valley. Now he spends his weekends chasing deer, hacking away at invasive shrubs and vines and wondering why he doesn`t have more meadow and less lawn.

i know your female counterpart. my neighbor. she works at conklin(sic?) farms .. she’s the one that likes the bush you dont ;-]
Hi Bill:
I too am a plantaholic…...would you like some spare dahlias from my collection?
Ed
Hi Ed. sure, would love some of your dahlias sometime. I want to write a story for the paper this summer on your dahlias. When will they be in full bloom, for the best photos?
Bill:
I’m home today, Tuesday through Friday AM. Email and stop
over for some plants. The dahlias will be in bloom mid July
although anytime in August is perfect.
Let me know,
Ed
